Crazier By The Day

I am saddened to see the depths that our country has sunk to and sadly we have not, in my opinion, yet hit the bottom.

We have a US President saying a communist country’s press is better than ours as he defy’s a court order to allow certain US journalists access to the people’s house and events of significant importance.

I often wonder how Jennifer’s dad would have reacted to all of this. Jennifer’s dad was a interesting individual. He was probably one of the sharpest men I have ever met. He was a decorated WWII veteran (Bronze Star and Purple Heart) and came very close to paying the ultimate sacrifice during his service to our country and the world. He had strong opinions on most issues and could justify those positions with strong arguments.

He was dealt a tough hand from early in his life. In fact we are not entirely clear on the exact circumstances/details of his infancy. He was adopted as a baby. Actually we believe he was adopted twice in a fairly short amount of time. His adoptive father died when he was a young boy and he was raised by his adoptive mother along with a sister who was also an adpoted child.

We believe that he had opportunities to learn and maybe did know who his biological family was/is. However if he did he never shared that with his children. He considered his adoptive parents his only parents. His sister did learn who her biological family was and actually had some interactions with them. Due to the death of his adoptive father, he was forced to go into the work force to help his mother and sister at a younger age than most people.

It would have been interesting to see how his life would have progressed if he had been dealt a better hand than he was. He would have been a good lawyer if he had or pursued that type of career. He knew how to push buttons (especially those of his children). He was raised in a time where racism was prevalent and acceptable, and he did have racist tendencies at times. However, those tendencies became less over the years that I knew him.

Anyway getting back on tract here. He absolutely hated Ronald Regan and he took that hate right up until his death. I believe I have mentioned before, it was not uncommon for him to go into the local coffee/donut shop with his hat in hand and tell the patrons that he was taking donations for the John Hinkley marksmanship fund.

I often wonder how he would have taken Trump. I am not sure how he would have felt about him. However I do know that he would have been absolutely livid about Trump 2.0 and how this world is going right now.

It was interesting to see how he changed/softened over the years that I knew him. Jennifer and her siblings played a role in some of this. He was fairly sexist when I first got to know Mick. However he softened up and became more tolerant on this as his daughters got educated and entered the workforce. He was very proud (and rightfully so) of all his kids.

As I have mentioned before, Jennifer being the last of seven kids had a different set of parents than her older siblings. Some of that was probably because they had aged and with age comes wisdom. Also they were at a different age when she reached the teenage years. Also her older siblings had stepped in and helped raise her. Anyway I often wonder how Mick would view the world today. I am confident that he would not approve.

I have been busy helping my Rotary club get ready for our major annual fundraiser. I have been selling raffle tickets and trying to help get everything set up for the tournament. Also I hosted a meet and greet at my house for a candidate for Mesquite City Council. I was pleased with how the event went but was disappointed with the turnout, several people canceled at the last minute. The reason I hosted this event was to give people the opportunity to learn about the candidate and reach an informed conclusion if they will or will not vote for him.

In my opinion, a persons vote is between them and their maker. I would hope that they educate themselves on the candidates and choose who they feel is going to make the community/world a better place. Straight party ticket voters frustrate me. No one party has all the answers. In my opinion both parties are broken.

Jennifer and I had some tough general elections to vote in. I have held my nose and voted for some candidates that I was not enthusiastic about because I felt they were the lesser of two evils. I have always tried to vote for the candidate not the party. However, at this point, if any candidate says they support Donald Trump or are endorsed by him then that is an automatic disqualification.

Again, I so miss not having Jennifer her to commiserate with me. However, at the same time I am glad she is being spared to having to live and deal with this shit show.
