Big Storm But Beautiful Weekend

Wednesday we had a pretty rough storms pass through Mesquite. Wednesday morning I had heavy rains here at my house, but that was just a warm-up for Wednesday night. We had lots of lightning/thunder, heavy rains, large hail and strong winds. My neighborhood got off light compared to other neighborhoods. We had some hail with a few large stones (I was sweating that it might break some of my windows, but everything held), but we did not have it as bad as other parts of the Sun City neighborhoods. The hail was weird in its shape. It was like ice cubes vs the spherical shape stones you usually see. Some were like icicles shapes (long and skinny)

Thursday morning I was at bocce and people were talking about the mud in streets around Sun City and had pictures of houses impacted by the hail or flooding.

After Bocce I went to our new event center here in Sun City and got my flu, Covid and pneumonia shots. Fortunately I did not have any side effects. My arm was not even tender even though I got three shots in it.

As I was getting my shots I had a few memories/flashbacks to the various times when Jennifer and I were getting our vaccines. The first one we got at the Alamodome in San Antonio. We had to schedule on line and then drive down to the Alamodome and get in lines in our car in one of the big outer parking lot based on our time. The people running the parking lot wrote our time on our windshield in soap stick and then lined us up in lines. Then when it was our turn we got escorted by a police vehicle up to the building. Then we had to park and walk into the building and then got sent to a area where nurses were lined up giving the shots. You got your shot and then you got sent to sit in a chair for 15 minutes to make sure you did not have a adverse reaction. TGhen you released and got sent back to your car to leave. All in all I felt it was very well organized and ran pretty damn well. Then our second shot was a drive in type scenario, I don’t remember the exact location of that one. It might have been the Alamodome, but senioritis is setting in. Regardless i remembered we arrived before our scheduled time they lined us up and you drove up and hung your arm out the window and a EMT, or nurse would give you the shot, then they wrote the time on your windshield and move you onto another lot and you had to wait to make sure you did not have a reaction and then you were released. Again, we both felt it was well run and efficient.

I remember how happy Jennifer and I were to get the vaccine and how we hoped it would bring us out of the dark times we were in. Little did we know that Covid was (in my opinion) just the start of the dark times in our country. A time we are still fighting to get out of six plus years later. Hopefully November 4, will make in roads to getting us back on track. However, I am pessimistic about that.

After I got done with my shots I decided to take a ride in my golf cart around the community to see the results of the storm. It was pretty amazing, the amount of mud that flowed thru some areas. Unfortunately some homes had flooded with mud and some neighborhoods got a lot more hail. Several people vehicles got some pretty good dents.

After the storm it got really nice and we had a beautiful weekend. I was really missing Jennifer this weekend. We would have had so much fun. Friday I met up with a couple of my fellow Rotarians to work on planning for a project we hope to conduct. We met at the Flatop Mesa Pickleball tournament here in Sun City because one of the members was working at her companies booth at the event. I did not play in the tournament this year because I just not feel like doing it.

Saturday was a busy day. There was a Alzheimer’s walk at the hospital early that morning. I met Margot and Allen and we walked in the walk. It was just a short route around the hospital parking lot, so kind of a boring walk. After that Iwent up and watched some of the Flattop Mesa Pickleball tournament and then I went to the Casablanca Casino for a duck derby they were having. The funds from the event went to a new cancer support group. It was a nice event. They had a DJ and several raffles and a big wheel that you could pay $20 and spin and win a bunch of nice prizes. I won a round of golf for two on my first spin and $50 dining card for meals at any of the restaurants at the Casablanca or Virgin River Casinos on my second spin. So I did pretty good.

Then I came home and watched a little college football and the second game of the World Series. So far it has been a exciting series. Even though Milwaukee has won the first two games, they were close games and even exciting to watch. I am not a big baseball fan, but I do like watching the championships series and then World Series. It is nice to see two small market teams playing it versus the usual big market teams.

Sunday I went and watched some more of the Pickleball tournament and then went and played bocce.

I had not slept well all weekend. However I made up for that today. I actually ended up sleeping in and ended up missing Pickleball this morning. That is Ok, I need to do some work around the house anyway. So I better get going and get started on that. So enough for today.

10 Billion Dollars Pissed Away

I heard a stat about this election cycle that blew me away. Over 10 billion (yes that is a b and not a m) have been spent in political advertising and materials this election cycle. How sad is that?
